This month at Computex marked the official one-year anniversary of the technology announcement of Thunderbolt™ 3. At its inception, Thunderbolt 3 was hailed as the “one port to rule them all.” The desire for compatibility and universal adoption is what has motivated our team in the past year to partner with a broad range of system and device makers to take advantage of this new technology.

In just one year, we’ve hit the following milestones:

• More than 60 PC designs – Thunderbolt 3 has achieved strong PC adoption with leading vendors that are now shipping many form factors across mobile and desktop, such as 2-in-1s, ultrathin clamshells, gaming notebooks, mobile workstations, All-in-Ones, desktop motherboards, and mini-PCs.

• More than 20 devices – With an additional 65 devices in the development pipeline now, our partners have introduced everything from PC docks and high speed storage to external graphics devices, low-cost dual video adapters starting at $99 and adapters for connecting new PCs to prior generations of Thunderbolt devices.

• New ways to use Thunderbolt – The introduction of external graphics, improved single-cable docking and a faster, simplified workflow for 4K video and VR content creation gives both users and manufacturers new ways to get more from a single port.

• Low-cost cables – Helping with broad adoption, Thunderbolt 3 cables are currently priced at less than $25. This is the same price as USB 3.1 Type-C cables.

• Award-winning recognition – Among the thousands of new products introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, Thunderbolt 3 was honored as a CES 2016 Innovation Awards Honoree.

Looking ahead, with 7^th generation Intel® Core™ processors, we expect to double the number of PCs with Thunderbolt 3. We also expect to ship dozens of new Thunderbolt 3 devices by the end of 2016. These new systems and devices will support the technology’s full capability for leading the transition from enterprise mechanical docking to single-cable docking while redefining mobile gaming with external graphics, and driving next generation VR solutions.
